Our Orientation Training program

Feel prepared and adjust to life in America before you meet your host family

Before you meet your Host Family and embark on your Au Pair experience we make sure you are fully prepared through our Pre Departure Online Training  and our 3 day orientation and training program.  Our Pre Departure Online Training  has been designed by our orientation trainers to help you to gain a greater understanding of our program before your departure to the United States. By completing a portion of the training online, the in-person training you will receive at our orientation hotel will allow more time to focus on child-development, host family communication, cultural adaptation and problem solving.

You and all the other au pairs arriving on the same day, will be met at the airport by an Au Pair in America representative and taken to our lovely 4 star Orientation hotel, located very close to New York City.

At Orientation you will be introduced to au pairs who will be living in the same area as you.  Over the years we have found that many great and lasting friendships are made at Orientation!

Orientation is designed especially to assist you in adapting to the American culture, prepare you for your year with your host family and offer practical advice and tips on childcare. Our dedicated Orientation Trainers have been there since the beginning of the program in 1986 and have welcomed thousands of au pairs to America!

By the time you meet your host family, you will be well equipped to go forward into your experience with good expectations and a clear understanding of all that it entails! Spending your first few days at Orientation is a wonderful opportunity to start making friends with all the other au pairs from around the world who will be sharing this exciting experience with you.

“I met my best au pair friend at Orientation. We hang out all the time, the kids have play dates, and we’ve done loads of travelling together.” Nicolette - South Africa

Orientation Itinerary

Your final preparation before you meet your host family

The Orientation schedule is pretty busy and packed full with important information to benefit you as an au pair.  The schedule includes a very informative Red Cross First Aid Training course and the option to elect a Driver Safety Course which will make you feel a lot more comfortable about driving in the USA.  The last day is probably one of the most exciting days of your time in the USA - it's the day that you will be meeting your host family face to face!  If your family lives in the New York area, then they will more than likely pick you up from the hotel.  Alternatively, if your host family lives in a different part of the USA, then you will be provided with your airline or train ticket.

Spending your first few days at Orientation is a wonderful opportunity to start making friends with all the other au pairs from around the world who will be sharing this exciting experience with you. It's not just about learning and settling in to the USA.  You'll have lots of fun too!  With New York City just a few miles away, there are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing. The organized Au Pair in America New York City tour proves popular with all our au pairs year after year! Within the first few days of being in America you will have waved 'hello' to Lady Liberty, strolled around the Rockerfeller Centre and have gone all the way up to the Top of the Rock!
